Holiday Cheer 2025 – Insider Edition

04-stanly-wine-floral_bloom room

The Bloom Room at Napa's Stanly Ranch

Hello Friends,

It's the holidaaaaaays! How was your Thanksgiving? My family's was very mellow. For the first time ever – and I mean the first time in my entire middle-aged life – I went out for dinner on Thanksgiving. I must admit: It was easy. I made a reservation and – poof! – dinner. We only waited an hour past our reservation time to be seated, but I cannot blame the restaurant. Stefan, Niki and my Mom ordered the full turkey experience. (The grumpy older teen stayed home.) Yes, the turkey was moist and the stuffing was not as good as mine. I had salmon and lentils, ingredients often left out of traditional Thanksgiving experiences yet surely fish was on the menu at the first one, no? Likely salmon AND cod alongside those tangy cranberries.

Even though the room was festive and the food good enough, I'm not sure we'll ever eat out on this holiday again. It did not feel quite right to be sitting somewhere besides the home of family or friends, eating food prepared by professionals. There's something delightfully amateur about the Thanksgiving meal that was lost by eating out. Oh well. Good thing I had two pies and ginger-infused whipped cream to come home to – that felt right.

Send thoughts on what you're cooking, eating, doing, reading. Was it delicious? Memorable? And don't forget: I'll be in your inbox twice more in December. Once we hit January, it's back to monthly.

What's Hot: Caviar & Bier, TCP at Anomaly, Bloom Room, Latkes + More

Not all together and not all at the same time. These are just a few of the food and food-adjacent events that have caught my attention in early-mid December.

Caviar & Bier pairings at Radhaus are a thing this holiday season

Caviar & Bier at Radhaus (thru Dec 31)

The Bavarian-inspired waterfront beer hall in San Francisco's Fort Mason, Radhaus, is shaking up your caviar dreams by pairing the briny nugs with beer. Yep, you heard me, BEER. (Or, in the German spelling, BIER.)

Playful,no? I think of it as a way for beer drinkers (which means everyone) to enjoy what is perceived as a luxury item.

For $98, a groaning board of caviar indulgence arrives with:

  • 28.3g Sasanian Kaluga caviar

  • Potato waffle chips

  • Crème fraîche

  • Egg

  • Chives

  • Haus pickle

The Haus suggests beer pairing: Grevensteiner Kellerbier (mellow), Rothaus Pilsner (sharp), or Weltenburger Dunkel (sweet). Each third of a liter is $8 or try all three for $20.

Table Culture Provisions at Anomaly (Dec 9)

One of the things I enjoy about Chef Mike Lanham's cooking at San Francisco's Michelin-recommended Anomaly is his insane creativity while creating big flavors. In what is sure to be an epic meal, Lanham is synching up with Chef Stéphane St. Louis from Petaluma's Michelin-recommend Table Culture Provisions for a once-in-a-lifetime meal.

it all starts with Lanham's Emoji Egg, creating a stable constant within the tasting menu that includes three chef collabs out of a total of 11 courses. St. Louis, whose cooking skews French, will present a gougères with trout mousse and a squid ink madeline as part of an Around the Sea dish. Here's the complete line-up of dishes.

5th Annual Latke Throwdown at Bardessono (Dec 11)

Channukah arrives this year on December 14 but there's eight crazy nights to practice your best potato hash (a.k.a rösti). In Yountville at the Bardessono Hotel, executive chef Rick Edge has invited other top local chefs to compete in a friendly but fierce latke-making contest. After a mere 30 minutes of cooking and a taste-off, the ultimate latke winner will be crowned and awarded The Golden Spatula. (For the love of Pete, don't make it a black one!)

Your $20 ticket includes the show, the crowning of the winner, and tasting the contenders' creations in three categories: creativity, presentation and taste.

The event runs from 5 – 7 p.m.

All proceeds benefit Parents CAN, a Napa-based nonprofit supporting families of children with special needs.

Tickets can be purchased at the door but advance purchase strongly recommended.

Bloom Room at Stanly Ranch (Dec 12-13, 18-19 & 26)

Need more flowers in your holiday? Me, too! That's why I am excited that floral designer Edgar Martinez Ruacho  is taking over the private dining room at Napa's Stanly Ranch, turning it into a seasonal super-bloom.

Gather for a six-course dinner and wine pairing where flowers take center stage, in garnishes, sauces, seasonings, and purées. In one dish, rose petals, preserved in vibrant red, are paired with Royal Osetra caviar, alongside hibiscus caramel deglazed into a sauce for California Wagyu with black garlic. It's a top to bottom floral extravaganza.

$234 per guest

You probably know that curating gift guides doesn't happen in a blink. I start researching items to include in Janaury and fill in any gaps by late October. For the past five years, I've created four guides – Cookbooks, Food, Booze (and booze-adjacent) and Sparklers. As 2025 turns to 2026 (ack!), I'll also share my Best Bites of 2025. (Here's last year's Best Bites.)

Sparklers will be out soon – I'm aiming for next week, right after I send this newsletter. ...

For now, please enjoy the first three Gift Guides out of the gate:

18 Boozy and Non-alcoholic Gift Ideas for 2025

Fresh, West Coast amaro, artist-driven bottles from California wineries, a non-alcoholic spritz that's actually delicious, and a fabu Portuguese vermouth top my list of boozy gifts and non-alcoholic drink gifts this year.

My 2025 Gift Guide for Food

As a food lover and food writer, I am asked what my favorite foods and restaurants are all the time. For my gift guide for food lovers, I looked for items from small businesses based in the American West, with a notable exception (it’s Swiss!). My list includes incredible shellfish and seafood from Washington, the cutest honey pots you've ever seen, a dinger of a caviar box, and some hella delicious Swiss-style cheeses. Plus chocolates and olive oil, of course.

25 Cookbooks for Everyone On Your List

25 Cookbooks for Everyone On Your List

My list includes cookbooks published in 2025 from the doyenne of Top Chef, Padma Lakshmi, and digs deeper into regional and blended cooking styles around the world. Alongside a cookbook that considers Korean temple cooking are two books that look at the threads that bring together the cooking from Eastern Europe to China, a Christmas cookbook highlighting the Gilded Age, two cookbooks geared towards gluten-free baking and cooking, and one from the gal who opened a cooking school in Julia Child's Provençal home.

Purchase links are embedded in each review.

More Restaurant News + More Next Week

I'm definitely a little behind on sharing my restaurant adventures in November. I'll get those recommendatioons into one of the next two newsletters. I'm also curating a few more podcasts...I'll share that in the coming weeks, too.

I'm actively looking for all things delicious to kick-off 2026. Got something I should know about? Please share.

Thanks for reading and be in touch.
